Reconnect the fiber optic router

To reconnect a fiber optic router, ensure the fiber cable is properly connected to the ONT, link the ONT to your router via Ethernet, and restart or reset the devices if needed.

Step 1: Check the Fiber Connection

  • Locate the Optical Network Terminal (ONT) provided by your ISP. This device converts the fiber optic signal into an Ethernet signal your router can use .
  • Ensure the fiber optic cable from your ISP is securely inserted into the ONT's optical port. Remove any protective dust caps and handle the connector by its plastic housing to avoid damage .
  • Confirm the ONT's Power light is solid green, indicating it is receiving electricity and ready to transmit data .

Step 2: Connect the ONT to Your Router

  • Use a Cat 6 or Cat 6a Ethernet cable to connect the ONT's LAN or Ethernet output port to the WAN/Internet port on your router .
  • Make sure the cable is fully inserted and the ports are correctly matched. Loose connections can prevent internet access.
  • Place both the ONT and router in a dry, well-ventilated area near a power outlet, ideally with surge protection .

Step 3: Power Cycle or Restart Devices

  • Power off the router and ONT by unplugging them from the power source. Wait about 30 seconds .
  • Power on the ONT first and wait a few minutes for it to boot and authenticate with your ISP's network .
  • Power on the router and allow it to fully start. Check the router's status lights to confirm connectivity .

Step 4: Reset if Necessary

  • If the connection still fails, perform a router reset: locate the reset button (usually recessed), press and hold it for 10–15 seconds, then release .
  • The router will reboot and restore factory settings. You may need to reconfigure Wi-Fi settings afterward.
  • For Google Fiber or similar devices, you can also use the GFiber app to restart or reset the router or Mesh Extender .

Step 5: Verify the Connection

  • Check the status lights on both the ONT and router. Solid green or blue lights typically indicate a successful connection .
  • Run a speed test to confirm internet performance. If issues persist, contact your ISP and report the device status lights for further assistance .

Following these steps should restore your fiber optic internet connection efficiently and safely.
