Installing a 12-core optical distribution box

A 12-core optical distribution box can be installed by securely mounting it, introducing and fixing optical cables, and carefully routing fibers to prevent bending and signal loss.

Step 1: Selecting and Mounting the Box

Choose a 12-core optical distribution box suitable for your environment. Options like the OYI-FAT12A or CRXCONEC 12-core boxes are made from high-strength ABS or PC+ABS materials, offering IP55–IP65 protection, making them suitable for indoor or outdoor use . Mounting can be done on a wall or pole, depending on your site requirements. Use the provided brackets and screws to secure the box, ensuring it is level and accessible for maintenance .

Step 2: Introducing Optical Cables

Feed the main optical cable into the box through the designated cable inlet. Use grommets or cable glands to secure the cable and maintain sealing against dust and moisture . The box typically accommodates 2 outdoor trunk cables and up to 12 FTTH drop cables for subscriber connections . Ensure the cable length inside the box is sufficient to allow the front panel to be fully extended without tension on the fibers .

Step 3: Fiber Routing and Splicing

Inside the box, fibers should be routed along predefined paths using splicing trays and routing spools. Maintain a minimum bend radius of 30–40mm to prevent macro-bending losses and signal degradation . Use cable ties or movable clips to secure trunk fibers, while individual drop fibers may remain free for flexibility . Fusion splices or mechanical splices can be performed in the splice tray, with heat-shrink protectors securing the fusion points .

Step 4: Connecting Subscriber Lines

Terminate the 12 SC simplex adapters or pre-connectorized pigtails to the subscriber drop cables. Ensure each fiber is clearly labeled and organized to facilitate maintenance and future expansion . The flip-up distribution panel design in many boxes allows easy access for connecting or disconnecting fibers without disturbing other connections .

Step 5: Final Checks

  • Verify that all fibers are properly routed and secured.
  • Check that the box is sealed and protected against environmental factors.
  • Test optical continuity and insertion loss to ensure signal integrity.
  • Document the fiber layout for future reference and maintenance . By following these steps, a 12-core optical distribution box can be installed efficiently, providing a reliable and organized solution for FTTX or FTTH networks. Proper installation ensures minimal signal loss, easy maintenance, and long-term durability.
