Optical modules are divided into transceiver ends

Optical modules are divided into transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) ends, typically implemented as TOSA and ROSA assemblies.

Transmitting End (Tx)

The transmitting end of an optical module is primarily responsible for converting electrical signals into optical signals. This is achieved through the Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA), which includes a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED), an optical interface, a monitoring photodiode, and driver circuitry. The TOSA modulates the light source according to the input electrical signal, ensuring proper optical power output and signal integrity. Laser diodes are commonly used for high-speed and long-distance transmission due to their higher output power and efficiency, while LEDs are suitable for low-rate, short-distance applications due to lower cost and longer lifespan .

Receiving End (Rx)

The receiving end converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals using the Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA). The ROSA typically contains a photodetector diode, preamplifier, and associated circuitry to detect and amplify the optical signal. The received optical signal is converted into an electrical signal of the corresponding bit rate, which can then be processed by the system .

Functional Overview

Optical modules operate at the physical layer of the OSI model, bridging electrical equipment and optical fibers. The Tx and Rx ends work together to enable electro-optical and photo-electric conversion, allowing data to be transmitted over fiber optic networks. The module's performance depends on factors such as average output power, extinction ratio, and wavelength, which influence transmission distance and signal quality .

Classification Based on Fiber Type

Optical modules are also categorized according to the type of fiber they support:

  • Single-mode modules: Designed for long-distance transmission, typically operating at 1310nm or 1550nm wavelengths.
  • Multi-mode modules: Suitable for short-distance transmission, usually operating at 850nm, with lower cost but limited bandwidth due to modal dispersion . In summary, optical modules are divided into transmitting (Tx) and receiving (Rx) ends, implemented as TOSA and ROSA, which perform the essential functions of converting electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa, enabling reliable fiber optic communication .

An optical module is a typically hot-pluggable optical transceiver used in high-bandwidth data communications applications. Optical modules typically have an electrical interface on the side that connects to the inside of the system and an optical interface on the side that connects to the outside world through a fiber optic cable. The form factor and electrical interface are often specified by an interested group using a multi-source agreement (MSA). Optical modules can either plug into a front pa
