Fiber Optic Installation for Terminal Box

Installing a fiber optic terminal box involves careful preparation, mounting, splicing, routing, and testing to ensure reliable fiber network performance.

Preparation

  1. Gather Tools and Materials: You will need a fiber termination box, fiber optic cables, fiber adapters, cable cutters and strippers, labeling tape, cleaning agents (alcohol or specialized cleaner), gloves, and a fusion splicer for splicing fibers .
  2. Inspect Cables: Check fiber optic cables for damage or defects and lay them flat for easier handling .
  3. Plan Installation Location: Choose a wall, cable rack, or standard 19-inch rack. Ensure the location allows at least 20 cm of space for cable storage and easy access to the front panel .

Mounting the Box

  1. Fix the Box: Use expansion screws or appropriate fasteners to secure the box firmly to the wall or rack .
  2. Ensure Accessibility: The front panel should be easily accessible, and the cable entry point should allow smooth routing without sharp bends .
  3. Outdoor Considerations: For outdoor boxes, ensure weather sealing, UV resistance, and flat mounting to prevent water ingress .

Cable Preparation and Entry

  1. Prepare Cable Ends: Strip the fiber cable to expose the bare fibers according to the supplier's instructions, taking care to protect the fibers .
  2. Pierce Cable Entry Diaphragm: If the box has a rubber diaphragm at the entry hole, pierce it before inserting the cable .
  3. Route Fibers: Use the plastic guide posts inside the box to route fibers to the splice tray, maintaining proper bend radius and avoiding stress .
  4. Clamp the Cable: Secure the cable at the splice tray entry using plastic clamping straps .

Splicing and Connection

  1. Splice Fibers to Pigtails: Use a fusion splicer to connect the incoming fiber to the pigtails inside the box .
  2. Install Adapters: Position SC, LC, FC, or ST adapters in the panel slots as required .
  3. Manage Slack: Store excess fiber in controlled loops within the splice tray to prevent tangling and maintain the minimum bend radius .

Labeling and Testing

  1. Label Connections: Clearly label each fiber and port for future maintenance and troubleshooting .
  2. Test Signal Quality: Use an optical power meter or OTDR to verify continuity, signal strength, and loss across all connections .
  3. Secure the Box: Close the lid tightly to prevent dust and moisture ingress .

  • Avoid sharp bends or tight loops in fiber routing to prevent signal loss .
  • Plan port capacity for current and future needs, including potential splitters .
  • For indoor installations, compact boxes are easier to maintain; for outdoor installations, ensure proper sealing and UV protection .
