Core Differences

Single-mode fiber (SMF) has a narrow core, typically around 8–10 µm, allowing only one mode of light to propagate. This design minimizes modal dispersion, enabling long-distance transmission with high signal integrity, making it ideal for backbone networks and long-haul communication links . Multimode fiber (MMF) has a larger core, usually 50 µm or 62.5 µm, which allows multiple light modes to travel simultaneously. This makes it suitable for shorter distances, such as within buildings, data centers, or campus networks .

Light Sources and Wavelengths

Single-mode fibers typically use laser light sources at wavelengths like 1310 nm or 1550 nm, which support long-distance, high-speed transmission . Multimode fibers often use LEDs or VCSELs at 850 nm, with some legacy applications using 1300 nm, optimized for short-reach, high-capacity links .

Bandwidth and Distance

The bandwidth of single-mode fiber is higher because it supports only one propagation mode, virtually eliminating modal dispersion. It can transmit data over kilometers to tens of kilometers depending on the application . Multimode fiber experiences modal dispersion due to multiple light paths, limiting its effective distance to tens to hundreds of meters, though newer OM4 and OM5 standards support higher bandwidth and shortwave wavelength division multiplexing (SWDM) for increased capacity .

Cost and Applications

Single-mode fiber is generally more expensive due to its precision manufacturing and laser-based transceivers, but it is essential for long-haul and high-speed networks . Multimode fiber is cost-effective for short-range applications, such as LANs, data centers, and interconnects within buildings .
