Fiber optic cables are identified using standardized color codes for jackets, buffer tubes, and individual fibers, following the TIA-598-C standard.

Fiber Jacket Color Codes

The outer jacket color of a fiber optic cable indicates the fiber type and mode:

  • Yellow: Single-mode fiber (OS1/OS2), 9µm core, long-distance transmission using laser sources
  • Orange: Multimode fiber (OM1/OM2), 50/62.5µm core
  • Aqua: Multimode fiber (OM3/OM4), laser-optimized
  • Green: APC (Angled Physical Contact) single-mode connectors
  • Blue: UPC (Ultra Physical Contact) single-mode connectors Custom jacket colors can be used if clearly labeled with printed legends for hybrid or specialized cables .

Individual Fiber Color Sequence

Inside multi-fiber cables, each fiber is color-coded for identification. The standard 12-color sequence is:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose
  12. Aqua For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats, often using a tube-and-fiber system for high-count cables (e.g., 48, 96, 144 fibers). For example, fiber #34 in a 144-fiber cable is the Violet fiber inside the Green tube .

Connector and Boot Color Codes

Connector colors indicate polish type and fiber mode:

  • Green boot: APC single-mode
  • Blue boot: UPC single-mode
  • Beige or Aqua boot: Multimode fibers (OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4) This ensures proper mating and prevents misconnection between incompatible fibers .

High-Count Cable Identification

For cables exceeding 12 fibers:

  • Fibers are grouped in color-coded buffer tubes
  • Each tube contains fibers following the 12-color sequence
  • Additional markings (stripes, rings, or dashes) differentiate repeated sequences This system allows technicians to quickly locate and identify fibers during splicing, termination, or troubleshooting .
