Cold connectors are mechanical fiber optic connectors that allow quick, epoxy-free installation, and when paired with fiber optic panels, they enable efficient, high-density network management.

Cold Connectors (Fast Connectors)

Cold connectors, also known as fast connectors, are designed for quick and easy installation without the need for epoxy or polishing. They use a mechanical splice to join fibers, making them ideal for field deployments and situations where speed and flexibility are critical . Key steps in their installation include:

  • Fiber Stripping: Removing the protective coating cleanly using a fiber stripping tool.
  • Fiber Cleaving: Cutting the fiber to a precise, smooth end using a calibrated fiber cleaver.
  • Mechanical Splicing: Aligning and securing the fibers in the connector to ensure minimal signal loss. Cold connectors are particularly useful in environments where traditional fusion splicing is impractical, and they are compatible with standard fiber types and patch panels .

Fiber Connector Types

Common fiber connectors include:

  • LC (Lucent Connector): Small 1.25 mm ferrule, push-pull latch, ideal for high-density applications and patch panels .
  • SC (Subscriber Connector): 2.5 mm ferrule, push-pull coupling, widely used in FTTH and data centers .
  • ST (Straight Tip): 2.5 mm ferrule, bayonet twist-lock, often used in campus networks and multimode links .
  • MPO/MTP: Multi-fiber push-on connectors for high-density trunking and 40G/100G links . For harsh or cold environments, standard connectors may allow water ingress, which can freeze and damage fibers. Ruggedized connectors, such as Bulgin 4000 Series LC connectors, are sealed to IP66/IP68/IP69K standards, UV and salt spray resistant, and operate from -25°C to +70°C, protecting fibers from ice, dirt, and dust .
