How to open the broadband terminal box

Opening a broadband terminal box (ONT) is possible, but it should be done carefully to avoid service disruption or damage.

Understanding the ONT

The Optical Network Terminal (ONT) is the main connection point between your home and the fibre network. It converts the incoming fibre signal into a connection your router can use. The ONT is fixed infrastructure and is essential for Full Fibre broadband, so it should generally remain in place and powered on .

Accessing the Box

Most ONT boxes have a hinged cover or a small lip at the bottom that can be lifted to access internal ports. The side you can access is usually not screwed shut, and you can lift the tab carefully without breaking it . Some boxes may have a screw securing the larger section, which can be accessed once the cover is opened. The cover often hinges from the top, and applying gentle pressure while lifting the tab is usually sufficient .

Tools and Safety

  • No special tools are typically required for the internal ONT cover; it can be opened like a battery cover .
  • For external cable boxes or pedestal terminals outside the house, a Can Wrench or 216B tool may be required, but these are generally for professional use .
  • Avoid unplugging the ONT unnecessarily, as this will immediately stop your broadband connection .

Connecting Your Router

Once the ONT cover is open, you can access the LAN or Ethernet ports. Connect your router directly to the ONT using a standard Ethernet cable. If your property has an Ethernet patch panel, you may also connect the router to a live extension port instead of directly to the ONT .

Important Considerations

  • Do not remove or tamper with the ONT itself, as it is property infrastructure and essential for broadband service .
  • Opening the cover is generally safe for accessing ports, but avoid touching fibre cables or internal electronics.
  • If unsure, contact your broadband provider or an Openreach engineer to avoid service disruption . By following these steps, you can safely access the broadband terminal box to connect or manage your router without compromising your Full Fibre broadband service.
