Main leakage current switch distribution box

A main leakage current switch (RCCB or RCBO) protects people and equipment by detecting leakage currents and disconnecting power in case of faults.

Function and Purpose

The main leakage current switch, also known as a residual current device (RCD) or leakage circuit breaker, is installed on the incoming side of a distribution box to protect against electric shock, fire, and equipment damage caused by leakage currents . It monitors the balance between the phase and neutral currents using a zero-sequence current transformer. If an imbalance occurs due to leakage, the switch trips and cuts off power within a fraction of a second, typically 0.1 seconds, preventing accidents .

Types of Leakage Switches

  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides leakage protection only; requires a separate MCB for overload and short-circuit protection .
  • RCBO (Residual Current Breaker with Overcurrent): Combines leakage, overload, and short-circuit protection in a single unit, saving space and providing comprehensive protection .
  • AC, A, B Types: Selected based on the type of load and presence of DC components. AC type is standard, A type handles pulsating DC, and B type is suitable for high-frequency or smooth DC loads .

Rated Leakage Current and Installation

  • Life protection: 30 mA is commonly used for personal safety.
  • Fire protection: 100–300 mA is used for industrial or high-power circuits to prevent fire hazards .
  • The switch should be installed as close to the electricity meter as possible, with phase and neutral wires passing together through the zero-sequence transformer. The neutral must not be shared with other circuits or PE, and the device should be kept away from high temperature, humidity, and corrosive gases .
