How to connect the fiber optic splitter to the fiber distribution box

To connect a fiber optic splitter to a fiber distribution box, mount the splitter securely, route and protect the fibers, connect via adapters or splices, and test the link for proper signal transmission.

Step 1: Prepare the Splitter and Distribution Box

  • Identify the type of splitter (PLC or FBT) and whether it has connectors or is bare (requires splicing) .
  • Clean the fiber ends and adapter ports using a fiber optic cleaning kit to remove dust and debris, ensuring precise connections .
  • Open the fiber distribution box and locate the designated slot or tray for the splitter. Most boxes have a protective card slot or clamp for the splitter's steel tube .

Step 2: Mount the Splitter

  • For connectorized splitters, place the splitter in the slot or tray and secure it with the built-in clamp or protective device .
  • For bare splitters, perform fusion splicing or mechanical splicing to connect the input and output fibers to the splitter, then place the spliced fibers in the splice tray within the box .
  • Ensure the splitter is positioned to avoid sharp bends and maintain the minimum bend radius.

Step 3: Route and Manage Fibers

  • Coil any excess fiber neatly in the box to prevent stress or damage .
  • Use fiber management tools or guides inside the box to maintain organized routing and prevent tangling .
  • Avoid tight bends and kinks, which can increase signal loss.

Step 4: Connect to Adapters or Distribution Ports

  • For connectorized splitters, plug the output fibers into the corresponding adapters in the distribution box .
  • Ensure each connector is fully seated and secured to prevent disconnection.
  • Label each output port for easy identification and future maintenance.

Step 5: Test the Installation

  • Power up the network equipment and use an optical power meter or OTDR to measure signal strength and link attenuation .
  • Verify that the optical loss is within the nominal splitter specifications (e.g., 1:8 PLC splitter ≈ 10.7 dB loss) .
  • Check uniformity across output ports to ensure consistent signal distribution.

Step 6: Finalize and Seal

  • Close the distribution box, ensuring all cables are strain-relieved and the box is properly sealed for environmental protection .
  • Document the installation for maintenance and troubleshooting purposes. By following these steps, the fiber optic splitter will be securely integrated into the distribution box, ensuring reliable signal distribution and minimal attenuation in the fiber network.
