How to lay fiber optic cables underground

Underground fiber optic cables are installed by planning the route, trenching, placing protective conduits, pulling the cable, and testing for performance.

Planning and Preparation

Before any physical work, conduct a site survey to identify obstacles such as roads, rivers, or rock formations, and obtain all necessary permits from local authorities and property owners . Trenching and Conduit Placement

Use PVC or HDPE conduits to protect the cable from environmental and mechanical damage, including shifting rocks, rodents, or accidental digging . In urban areas, sub-ducts can be placed inside larger conduits to allow multiple cables and future upgrades . For crossings under roads or sidewalks, directional boring can minimize surface disruption .

Cable Installation

Prepare the fiber optic cable by stripping the jacket, cleaning the fibers, and performing preliminary tests . Carefully pull or blow the cable into the conduit, maintaining proper tension and avoiding sharp bends to prevent signal loss .
