Fog light dimming module wiring

A fog light dimming module is typically wired using a relay, inline fuse, and a switch to safely control brightness while protecting the circuit.

Core Wiring Setup

  1. Power Source and Fuse Connect the positive terminal of the battery to the dimming module through an inline fuse rated slightly below the wire's current capacity. For most 12V fog light circuits, a 10–15A fuse is common, depending on the total wattage of the fog lights (e.g., two 35W lamps draw ~5.8A) . This protects the wiring and module from overload.
  2. Relay Integration Use a 4- or 5-pin automotive relay to handle high current. The relay terminals are typically:
    • 30: Power input from the battery/fuse
    • 87: Output to the fog lights
    • 85 & 86: Coil terminals for triggering the relay
    • 87a (optional): Normally closed contact, usually unused in standard fog light circuits . The dimming module can be connected to the relay's coil side to modulate the voltage or PWM signal, controlling the brightness without overloading the switch.
  3. Switch and Control Wiring Connect the dimming module's control input to a dash-mounted switch. The switch can be powered from an ignition-switched source to prevent accidental operation when the vehicle is off. Some modules allow integration with the headlight circuit so fog lights dim automatically when high beams are on .
  4. Grounding Ensure the module, relay, and fog lights are properly grounded to the chassis. Poor grounding can cause flickering or reduced brightness. Run a dedicated ground wire from each lamp housing to the chassis if possible .
  5. Output to Fog Lights The relay's output (terminal 87) connects to the fog lights. The dimming module modulates this output, either by reducing voltage or using a PWM signal, depending on the module design. Use automotive-grade wire (typically 14–16 AWG) to handle the current safely .
  6. Testing and Securing After wiring, reconnect the battery and test the dimming function. Verify smooth brightness adjustment, no flickering, and that the fuse remains cool. Secure all wires with zip ties or clamps to prevent abrasion or contact with hot/moving parts .

Additional Tips

  • Weatherproofing: Use heat-shrink tubing or weatherproof connectors to protect against moisture and corrosion.
  • Wire Sizing: Always choose wire capable of handling at least double the expected current to prevent overheating .
  • Indicator Light: If the switch has an indicator, wire it according to the module's instructions, usually to a dash illumination source or ground . By following this method, the fog light dimming module will operate safely, provide adjustable brightness, and maintain reliable performance in automotive conditions.
