Configuring the Core Switch for Internal and External Networks

A core switch can be configured to manage internal and external networks by creating VLANs, binding interfaces to VPN instances, and setting up OSPF routing for connectivity and isolation.

Core Switch Role

A core switch serves as the high-capacity backbone of an enterprise network, aggregating traffic from distribution switches and routing it efficiently across internal and external networks. It focuses on high-speed forwarding and delegates complex policy enforcement to lower layers to maintain wire-speed performance and low latency .

Steps to Configure Internal and External Networks

1. Interface and VLAN Configuration

  • Internal Network (User Network):
    • Create VLANs on the core switch for interconnection with distribution switches or BRAS devices.
    • Assign interfaces connecting to these devices to the corresponding VLANs.
    • Create VLANIF interfaces and bind them to a VPN instance (e.g., vpn1) to isolate internal traffic from external routes .
  • External Network (Egress/Firewall):
    • Similarly, create VLANs for interfaces connecting to firewalls or egress routers.
    • Bind VLANIF interfaces to the same or separate VPN instance depending on traffic isolation requirements.
    • Ensure proper IP addressing for each interface to enable routing between internal and external networks .

2. Routing Configuration

  • OSPF Setup:
    • Configure OSPF on the core switch to form the backbone IP network.
    • Assign OSPF to the VLANIF interfaces to advertise internal and external routes.
    • Verify OSPF adjacency and route propagation to ensure connectivity across the network .
  • Route Isolation:
    • Use VPN instances to separate public network routes from return routes coming from firewalls.
    • This prevents routing conflicts and ensures secure traffic flow between internal users and external networks .

3. Redundancy and High Availability

  • Implement logical and physical redundancy: dual power supplies, modular fans, and protocols like VRRP or HSRP to maintain uptime.
  • Consider EAPS or other Layer 2 redundancy protocols for VLAN protection and loop prevention in the core network .

4. Verification

  • Check VLAN and interface status to ensure proper binding to VPN instances.
  • Verify OSPF neighbor relationships and routing tables.
  • Test connectivity from internal hosts to external networks and vice versa to confirm correct segmentation and routing.

  • Keep the core switch focused on high-speed forwarding; offload ACLs and complex filtering to distribution or edge devices.
  • Use separate VPN instances for internal and external traffic to maintain security and simplify troubleshooting.
  • Document VLAN IDs, IP addresses, and OSPF areas for easier network management and future scaling.
