How to test the signal of an optical cable

Fiber optic cable signals can be tested using visible light, power meter and light source, or OTDR methods to ensure continuity, measure attenuation, and locate faults.

Key Methods for Testing Fiber Optic Cables

1. Visual Inspection and Visible Light Source (VFL): A visible light source, often a red laser, is used to check continuity and detect breaks or sharp bends in the fiber. Connect the VFL to one end of the fiber and observe the opposite end. If light is visible, the fiber is continuous; if not, there may be a break. This method is quick for troubleshooting and identifying faults along the cable length, but it does not measure signal loss quantitatively . 2. Power Meter and Light Source (One-Jumper Method): This method measures end-to-end signal loss (attenuation). Steps include:

  • Disconnect active equipment.
  • Select the correct light source wavelength: 1310 nm or 1550 nm for single-mode fiber, 850 nm or 1300 nm for multimode fiber.
  • Calibrate the power meter and light source according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Connect a test jumper between the light source and power meter, record the reference power (Pref).
  • Insert the fiber under test and measure the received power. Compare the measured loss to the link attenuation allowance, calculated as: Link Attenuation Allowance (dB) = Cable Attenuation Allowance + Connector Insertion Loss + Splice Insertion Loss . 3. Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR): OTDR testing sends pulses of light down the fiber and analyzes backscatter and reflections to detect faults, bends, splices, and connector losses. It provides a detailed map of the fiber, showing the location and severity of issues, making it ideal for long runs or complex networks .

  • Inspect connectors before testing using a fiber scope or microscope to remove dirt or debris. Contaminated connectors can cause signal loss or damage equipment .
  • Use proper test jumpers and adapters to match fiber type and size.
  • Document results for each fiber segment to track performance over time and support maintenance or upgrades .
  • Follow industry standards such as TIA/EIA, IEC, and ISO to ensure consistent and reliable testing . By combining these methods, you can verify fiber continuity, measure signal loss accurately, and locate faults efficiently, ensuring optimal network performance and reliability.
