How to test the quality of a beam splitter loss

The quality of a beam splitter can be tested by measuring its insertion loss and excess loss using an optical power meter and a calibrated light source, following a double-ended loss test procedure.

Understanding Splitter Loss

Insertion loss is the reduction in optical power from the input to a single output port, including both the splitting loss and any excess loss from manufacturing or connectors. Excess loss is the difference between the input power and the total power measured from all output ports, ensuring the total output is always less than the input. Signal attenuation in a splitter is symmetrical, meaning the loss is the same in both directions, whether the splitter is combining or dividing signals .

Required Equipment

  • Optical power meter: Measures the optical power at the output ports.
  • Calibrated light source: Provides a stable optical signal at the correct wavelength (e.g., 1310 nm, 1490 nm, 1550 nm) for the splitter.
  • Launch reference cables: Connect the light source and power meter to the splitter ports.

Testing Procedure

  1. Set up the light source: Connect a launch reference cable to the light source and calibrate the output with the optical power meter to set a 0 dB reference .
  2. Connect to the splitter: Attach the light source to the input port of the splitter.
  3. Measure output ports: Connect a receive launch cable from each output port to the power meter and record the optical power. This measures the insertion loss for each port .
  4. Test all ports: For 1xN splitters, repeat the measurement for each output port. For 2xN splitters, test from each input to all outputs .
  5. Reverse direction: To verify bidirectional performance, reverse the test direction and repeat measurements from outputs to inputs .
  6. Calculate excess loss: Sum the measured output powers and compare with the input power to determine excess loss .

Additional Considerations

  • Wavelength dependence: Some splitters perform differently at various wavelengths, so testing at multiple wavelengths may be necessary .
  • Output uniformity: Compare losses across all output ports to ensure consistent splitting ratios.
  • Crosstalk testing: Optional tests can check for signal leakage between outputs.
  • Network integration: Once installed, the splitter's loss contributes to the overall system insertion loss and should be included in network performance verification . By following this method, you can accurately assess the quality and performance of a beam splitter, ensuring it meets design specifications and network requirements.
