Transmittance of Fiber Optic Sensors

The transmittance of fiber optic sensors depends on the fiber type, sensor design, and light modulation, with most light guided through the core while some is lost to the cladding or reflected by gratings.

Light Transmission in Optical Fibers

Optical fibers guide light primarily through total internal reflection in a transparent core surrounded by a lower refractive index cladding. Light incident at angles above the critical angle is fully reflected and transmitted along the fiber, while light at smaller angles may refract into the cladding and be lost, reducing transmittance . A portion of the light also propagates as evanescent waves in the cladding, which can interact with the environment in intrinsic sensors .

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Fiber Optic Sensors

  • Intrinsic sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element. The measurand (e.g., strain, temperature, pressure) modulates the intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength of light traveling through the fiber. Transmittance is affected by these modulations, as the light may be partially absorbed, scattered, or reflected within the fiber .
  • Extrinsic sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from an external transducer. Here, transmittance is mainly determined by the fiber's attenuation and coupling efficiency between the fiber and the sensor .

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) and Transmittance

FBGs are widely used in fiber optic sensors. They consist of a periodic variation in the refractive index of the fiber core, reflecting specific wavelengths while transmitting others. The transmittance spectrum shows high transmission for non-Bragg wavelengths and a reflection peak at the Bragg wavelength. For example, a uniform FBG of 10 mm length can transmit about 90% of non-reflected light, while a 3 mm FBG may transmit only 10% at the Bragg wavelength . Chirped FBGs broaden the reflected spectrum, affecting transmittance across a wider wavelength range .

Factors Affecting Transmittance

  1. Fiber type: Single-mode fibers have lower losses and higher transmittance over long distances compared to multimode fibers .
  2. Wavelength: Light near the fiber's optimal transmission window (e.g., 1550 nm) experiences minimal attenuation .
  3. Environmental conditions: Temperature, strain, and pressure can alter the refractive index and induce scattering or absorption, modifying transmittance .
  4. Connector and splice losses: Imperfect coupling or misalignment reduces transmitted light intensity .

Summary

The transmittance of fiber optic sensors is a function of the fiber's optical properties, sensor design, and environmental interactions. Intrinsic sensors modulate light within the fiber, while extrinsic sensors rely on efficient light delivery. Bragg gratings selectively reflect wavelengths, shaping the transmitted spectrum. Optimizing fiber type, wavelength, and sensor configuration is essential to maximize transmittance and sensor performance .
