How to use an industrial signal switch

An industrial signal switch controls electrical circuits by providing ON/OFF signals to a PLC or control system, enabling monitoring and automation of industrial processes.

Understanding Industrial Signal Switches

An industrial signal switch is a device that opens or closes an electrical circuit, producing a binary signal (ON or OFF) that can be read by a controller such as a PLC or DCS . These switches are commonly used to monitor physical parameters like pressure, temperature, liquid level, or flow. When a threshold is reached, the switch changes state, sending a signal to the control system to trigger alarms, start/stop equipment, or log events .

Types of Industrial Signal Switches

  • Pressure Switches: Activate when a specific pressure is reached, often used in hydraulic or pneumatic systems .
  • Level Switches: Detect liquid or solid levels in tanks or silos, including float or capacitive types .
  • Flow and Temperature Switches: Trigger signals when flow rates or temperatures exceed set limits .
  • Digital Input Switches: Interface with PLCs using 24V DC or AC signals, often with galvanic isolation for safety .

Using a Signal Switch

  1. Installation: Mount the switch according to manufacturer specifications, ensuring proper alignment with the monitored parameter (e.g., pressure port, tank level).
  2. Wiring: Connect the switch to the PLC or control system. For a 24V DC system, 0V typically represents OFF and 24V represents ON . Use positive or negative logic as required by your system.
  3. Configuration: Set the threshold or setpoint at which the switch changes state. For example, a pressure switch may open its contact at 6 bar .
  4. Integration with PLC: The PLC reads the switch's digital input and executes programmed logic. For instance, if a level switch indicates a tank is full, the PLC can stop a pump or trigger an alarm .
  5. Testing and Maintenance: Verify the switch operates correctly by simulating the monitored condition. Regularly inspect for wear, corrosion, or electrical faults.

Practical Considerations

  • Ensure the switch's voltage and current ratings match the system requirements .
  • Use switches with galvanic isolation if interfacing with sensitive electronics to prevent electrical noise or damage .
  • Understand the logic type (normally open or normally closed) to correctly interpret signals in the control system .
  • Document the switch's function and wiring for maintenance and troubleshooting. By following these steps, an industrial signal switch can reliably provide binary signals to control systems, enabling automated monitoring and safe operation of industrial processes .
