Understanding Fiber Optic Pigtails

A fiber optic pigtail is a short length of optical fiber with a factory-installed connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other. 2. Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing aligns two fiber ends within a small housing using an index-matching gel to bridge the microscopic gap. This method is faster, requires no power, and is suitable for temporary or emergency connections, though it typically has higher loss (0.2–0.75 dB) than fusion splicing . Steps for Mechanical Splicing:

  1. Strip and clean the fiber ends as with fusion splicing.
  2. Cleave the fibers to create smooth end faces.
  3. Insert the fibers into the mechanical splice holder.
  4. Apply index-matching gel to reduce reflection and loss.
  5. Close the housing to secure the fibers. Mechanical splicing is often used for short-term repairs or quick installations where fusion splicing equipment is unavailable .
