How to check the weight of a cable tray

The weight of a cable tray is calculated by multiplying the tray's material density by its volume, considering dimensions, thickness, and type of tray.

Step 1: Identify Tray Material

Cable trays are commonly made from steel, stainless steel, aluminum, or FRP. Each material has a specific density: steel ~7,850 kg/m³, stainless steel ~8,000 kg/m³, aluminum ~2,700 kg/m³, and FRP ~1,800–2,000 kg/m³ . The choice of material affects both the tray's weight and its structural performance.

Step 2: Measure Tray Dimensions

You need the width (W), side height (H), length (L), and material thickness (T). For trays with return flanges or covers, include these dimensions as well. For perforated trays, account for the open area percentage to reduce the effective metal volume .

Step 3: Calculate Tray Volume

For solid or perforated trays, approximate the developed width as W + 2H + 2R, where R is the return flange. Multiply this by the tray length and material thickness to get the metal volume. Ladder trays are calculated as the sum of the two side rails plus the average rung material per meter, considering rung spacing (typically 200–300 mm), .

Step 4: Multiply by Material Density

Once you have the tray volume, multiply it by the material density to get the tray's empty weight. This gives the baseline load for supports, hangers, and brackets .

Step 5: Include Cable Weight (Optional)

To determine the total structural load, add the weight of the cables. Consider the type, size, and number of cables, as copper cables are heavier than aluminum, and armored cables weigh more than unarmored . This ensures accurate load calculations for support design.

Step 6: Consider Additional Loads

For safety, also account for moving loads such as maintenance personnel, tools, snow, ice, wind, or vibration if applicable . This is especially important for outdoor or industrial installations.
