Understanding Hybrid Cables

Hybrid cables combine optical fibers for data and copper conductors for power in a single sheath, allowing simultaneous transmission of data and electrical power to devices like access points, cameras, or remote radios . They are often used in industrial, outdoor, or smart city deployments due to their durability and space efficiency .

Preparation

  1. Safety First: Ensure no power is connected before handling the cables .
  2. Inspect the Cable: Check for any visible damage, avoid stepping on or bending the cable excessively, and keep it away from sharp objects .
  3. Tools Required: Fusion splicer, optical fiber cleaver, alcohol wipes, lint-free cloths, hybrid connectors, and fiber management trays .

Connecting the Optical Fibers

  1. Pigtail Preparation: Hybrid cables often have pigtail cords at each end. These pigtails contain optical fibers and copper wires with hybrid connectors .
  2. Fusion Splicing:
    • Splice the main cable fibers to the pigtail fibers on-site.
    • At the switch side, splice fibers of the same color; at the powered device side, splice fibers of different colors .
    • Use a red pointer or optical fiber adapter to check for breaks after splicing .
  3. Bending Radius: Maintain a minimum bending radius of five times the cable diameter for the main cable and 15 mm for branch fibers to prevent damage .

Handling Copper Conductors

  1. Connection: Connect the copper wires in the pigtail to the corresponding copper wires in the main cable .
  2. Power Considerations: Ensure the copper cross-section is sufficient for the device's voltage and current requirements, especially for long-distance runs .

Connector and End-Face Care

  1. Cleanliness: Keep hybrid connector end faces clean; use alcohol and lint-free wipes if necessary .
  2. Protection: Cover unused connectors with dustproof caps and avoid contact with other objects .
  3. Replacement: If the end face is damaged, replace the pigtail .

Installation and Routing

  1. Cable Drum Handling: Lead the cable slowly and evenly from the drum, typically 5–15 meters per minute .
  2. Coiling Excess Fiber: Use fiber management trays to coil excess fiber evenly, avoiding over-bending .
  3. Bundling: When bundling multiple hybrid cables, ensure proper spacing and avoid overfilling conduits .

Testing

After installation, verify both optical signal integrity and power delivery to ensure the hybrid cable is functioning correctly . By following these steps, hybrid optical cables can be connected safely and efficiently, providing reliable data and power transmission for your network infrastructure.
