Optical Cable Termination Process

Fiber optic cable termination involves preparing, cleaning, cleaving, connecting or splicing, and testing the fiber to ensure low-loss, reliable optical connections.

1. Preparation and Safety

Begin by ensuring a clean, dust-free workspace. Gather essential tools such as fiber strippers, Kevlar cutters, high-precision cleavers, and consumables like lint-free wipes and alcohol. Wear protective glasses and gloves to prevent injury from glass shards, and have a debris collection box ready for fiber scraps. Slide any connector boots onto the cable before stripping to avoid damage during the process .

2. Stripping the Cable

Remove the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable (typically 30–60 cm) and trim the Kevlar or aramid fibers to expose the inner coating. Carefully strip 10–15 mm of the buffer coating to reveal the bare glass fiber (about 250 µm in diameter). Handle the fiber gently to avoid breakage .

3. Cleaning and Cleaving

Clean the exposed fiber with anhydrous alcohol and lint-free wipes until no residue remains. Use a high-precision cleaver to cut the fiber, ensuring a flat, perpendicular 90° end face. Never touch the fiber end after cleaning, as contamination can cause signal loss .

4. Termination or Splicing

  • Connector Termination: Insert the cleaved fiber into the connector ferrule, secure it with epoxy or mechanical means, cure if necessary, and polish the end face. Inspect under a microscope to ensure proper alignment and minimal insertion loss .
  • Fusion Splicing: Place the fiber ends into a fusion splicer, which aligns and welds the fibers using an electric arc. Protect the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve. Fusion splicing provides a permanent, low-loss connection ideal for long-haul or high-bandwidth applications .

5. Inspection and Testing

Inspect the terminated fiber or splice under a 400x microscope to check for defects. Test the optical loss using an OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) or an optical power meter. Target insertion loss is typically <0.75 dB for connectors and <0.3 dB for fusion splices .
