Routing and Placement

Conduits should follow the most direct and accessible route to the distribution box or entrance facility, avoiding hot water lines, steam pipes, or other utilities that could compromise safety or performance. Conduits entering through floors should terminate approximately four inches above the finished floor to allow flexibility in cable racking and future upgrades. Surface-mounted conduits are only used when in-wall or in-ceiling routing is not feasible, and under-slab conduits require at least 1 inch of concrete encasement on all sides if approved .

Conduit Sizing and Bends

Each conduit should be sized according to the number of cables it will carry, and no more than two 90° bends (or 180° total) are allowed without a pull box. Pull boxes should be installed at intervals not exceeding 100 feet or whenever the conduit contains multiple bends to facilitate cable pulling . All conduit ends must be bushed and reamed to prevent cable damage during installation.

Grounding and Bonding

All metallic conduits entering the distribution box or entrance facility must be bonded together and connected to the Primary Bonding Busbar (PBB) using a minimum #6 AWG ground conductor. The PBB should be located near the point where backbone cables terminate, and all equipment and panels in the room must be bonded to it. Secondary bonding busbars (SBB) in other telecommunications rooms should interconnect with the PBB via the Telecommunications Bonding Backbone (TBB) to equalize potential differences .

Compliance and Testing

Conduit runs must comply with NEC Article 230 for service entrance conductors and TIA/EIA-569 for telecommunications pathways. Conduits should be tested with a mandrel to ensure proper bend radius, and all in-use and spare conduits must be sealed to prevent water, gas, or rodent intrusion. Lubricants may be used for long or complex pulls, and deviations from standard practices require prior approval from the authority having jurisdiction .
