ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) optical cables are organized internally using either central tube or layer-stranded structures, and their installation involves coordinated teams for safety, preparation, and cable deployment.

Cable Structure and Fiber Organization

ADSS cables are designed to be self-supporting and fully dielectric, allowing installation along high-voltage power lines without metallic components, which prevents electrical interference and ensures safety near energized conductors . The internal optical fibers are organized in two main structural types:

  1. Central Tube Structure: Optical fibers are placed inside a PBT (Polybutylene Terephthalate) tube filled with water-blocking gel. The fibers are given excess slack length to reduce strain, and the tube is wrapped with spun yarn for tensile strength, followed by an outer sheath made of PE (Polyethylene) or AT (Anti-tracking material) depending on voltage requirements .
  2. Layer-Stranded Structure: Loose tubes containing fibers and water-blocking grease are twisted around a central reinforcement, typically Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Kevlar yarn is added for tensile strength, and the assembly is covered with a protective outer sheath. This design is suitable for longer spans and higher fiber counts . Fibers can be arranged in loose buffer tubes or ribbon configurations, allowing a single cable to carry up to 864 fibers. The design ensures minimal optical loss and protection from environmental factors like UV radiation, wind, and ice .

Installation Organization

The deployment of ADSS cables requires a structured team organization to ensure safety and efficiency :

  • Safety Supervision Coordination Group: Oversees construction, safety, and quality inspection; coordinates external logistics such as power outages or flight suspensions; monitors cable pulling and addresses obstacles or abnormal conditions immediately.
  • Preparation Group: Clears line passage obstacles, inventories and transports cables and hardware, and sets up spanning frames.
  • Traction Rope Group: Installs hoop clamps and pay-off pulleys on towers, spreads traction ropes tower by tower, and connects them with anti-twist connectors.
  • Optical Cable Exhibition Tension Line Group: Manages the actual pulling and tensioning of the optical cable along the towers, ensuring proper alignment and minimal mechanical stress.

Key Considerations

  • Hanging points should minimize exposure to high-voltage electric fields to prevent electrical corrosion, typically selecting positions with AT sheath ≤ 25 kV/m for high-voltage lines and PE sheath <12 kV/m for lower voltages .
  • The cable should avoid contact with conductors, ground wires, and tower structures to prevent whiplash or abrasion during wind deflection.
  • Proper organization and coordination of teams are critical for safe, efficient, and high-quality installation of ADSS cables along overhead transmission lines. This combination of internal fiber organization and structured installation management ensures that ADSS cables maintain mechanical integrity, optical performance, and operational safety throughout their service life.
