Single-Layer Optical Cables

Single-layer optical cables, often called central tube cables, pack all fiber strands into a single gel-filled tube at the core. The gel filling provides longitudinal water-blocking, protecting the fibers from moisture, while the outer jacket shields against environmental factors like abrasion and temperature changes. Single-layer cables are typically used for shorter runs or smaller-scale deployments where fewer fibers are needed .

Multi-Layer Optical Cables

Multi-layer optical cables, also known as layer-stranded cables, arrange multiple loose tubes helically around a central steel or FRP strength member. This design allows for scaling from 24 to 288+ cores, making it suitable for long aerial spans, underground trunk routes, and submarine shallow-water sections. Multi-layer cables can include armoring (e.g., double-sided steel tape) for direct-burial crush resistance and are designed to handle high tensile loads. They are ideal for large-scale, high-capacity networks where durability and long-distance performance are critical .
