Planning and Design

Cable Selection

Choose a direct-burial rated cable, which may include:

  • Loose-tube, gel-filled or gel-free for long outdoor runs, protecting fibers from water and microbending .
  • Armored cables with metal layers for high mechanical risk areas like road crossings or rocky soil .
  • Tight-buffered or breakout-style cables for easy termination near buildings .

Installation Methods

Two primary methods are used:

  • Trenching: Hand or machine-dug trenches allow precise placement, multiple cables, and controlled bedding. Slower but suitable for complex terrain .
  • Plowing: Efficient for long, linear routes; a plow opens a narrow slot and lays cable in a single pass. Faster but offers less control over bedding . Use sand or fine scree bedding (2–4 inches) under and over the cable to cushion and reduce rock penetration risk .

Depth and Protection

  • Minimum cover is typically 30 inches (≈77 cm), with greater depth at road crossings or in freezing soils .
  • Install warning tape 6–12 inches above the cable to alert future excavators .
  • Include a tracer wire for locating the cable without excavation .
  • At critical points like road crossings or building entrances, use short conduit sections or handholes for added protection and future access .

Handling and Safety

  • Avoid excessive pulling force, sharp bends, or crushing, as these can degrade fiber performance over time .
  • Use figure-eight coiling for cable slack to prevent kinking .
  • Ensure all personnel are trained in OSHA regulations and company safety procedures .

Standards and Testing

Follow ITU-T L.101 and IEC 60794-3-11 for buried optical fiber cable characteristics, construction, and testing . Perform electrical continuity tests for metallic elements if present and verify cable performance before and after installation.

Backfill and Finalization

  • Backfill trenches carefully to avoid sharp rocks or debris contacting the cable .
  • Compact soil gently and restore surface grading.
