Optical Fiber Distributed Acoustic Sensors: A Review
Fiber-optic distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) is one of the most attractive and promising fiber-optic sensing
The first fiber optic sensor was patented in the 1960s, initially relying on free-space optics, which required a direct line of sight and could not be easily deployed in operating structures or vehicles . Around a decade later, researchers developed the first intrinsic fiber optic sensors, which integrated the sensing function directly into the optical fiber itself. This innovation allowed signals to be transmitted within a deployable medium, providing reliable mechanical measurements and overcoming the limitations of free-space systems .
Optical fibers were initially conceived for medical endoscopic applications in the mid-1960s and soon considered for telecommunications, where they became the standard for transmitting large amounts of data over long distances . The widespread adoption of optical fibers in communications reduced costs and improved quality, which in turn facilitated the development of fiber optic sensors for structural and environmental monitoring .
By the 1980s, fiber optic sensors were commercialized, with the fiber optic gyroscope being one of the earliest applications. This technology became critical for stabilization and navigation systems . In the 1990s, the civil engineering sector began using fiber optic sensors to measure temperature, strain, and pressure, and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors emerged, offering multiplexing and quasi-distributed sensing capabilities that surpassed earlier interferometric sensors .
Fiber optic sensors operate by modulating properties of light—such as intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength—in response to environmental changes like strain, temperature, or pressure . Intrinsic sensors use the fiber itself as the sensing element, while extrinsic sensors relay signals from a remote sensing element to processing electronics. These sensors are immune to electromagnetic interference, electrically passive, and can be deployed over long distances, making them highly versatile .
The origins of fiber optic sensing technology are rooted in 1960s optical innovations, with key milestones including the development of intrinsic fiber sensors, commercialization in the 1980s, and the introduction of FBG sensors in the 1990s. Its evolution was strongly influenced by advances in telecommunications, enabling widespread adoption in civil, aerospace, and industrial applications .
