Placing fiber optic cables under cable trays

Fiber optic cables can be safely installed under cable trays if proper support, bend radius, and separation from power cables are maintained.

Compliance and Standards

Fiber optic cables installed in cable trays must comply with the National Electric Code (NEC) Article 770, which permits listed optical fiber cables such as OFNP, OFCP, OFNR, OFCR, OFNG, OFCG, OFN, and OFC in tray systems. There is no specific tray rating for fiber cables, but any listed cable is acceptable, provided other restrictions, such as plenum rating in plenum areas, are observed . Local building codes and ordinances may also apply.

Mechanical Protection

Fiber optic cables are fragile due to their thin glass cores. To prevent damage:

  • Do not pull on the glass fibers; pull only on the strength members like Kevlar or fiberglass rods .
  • Avoid sharp bends and edges; maintain a minimum bend radius, typically 20 times the cable diameter for long runs .
  • Use protective innerducts or armored cables in areas where cables may be crushed or exposed to heavy loads .
  • Support cables properly: wire basket trays are ideal for small, numerous cables, while ladder trays are better for heavy backbone cables. Rungs should be spaced closely (150–225 mm) to prevent sagging and stress on the fibers .

Installation Techniques

  • Figure-8 method: Lay long cable runs on the ground in a figure-8 pattern to prevent twisting and stress on the fibers .
  • Pull, don't push: Always pull cables to avoid exceeding the maximum pulling tension and to maintain the minimum bend radius .
  • Service loops: Include loops at intermediate points to allow for future maintenance and to relieve tension .
  • Vertical runs: Drop cables down rather than pulling up, using proper hangers and clamps to prevent excessive weight on the fibers .

Separation from Power Cables

Fiber cables should not be mixed with copper power cables in the same tray if possible, as the heavier copper cables can stress the fiber. If co-location is unavoidable, consider running fiber below the tray or in separate innerducts to protect it from mechanical stress .

Documentation and Planning

A thorough site survey and cable pulling plan are essential. Document cable types, routes, pulling equipment, splice locations, and personnel responsibilities. This reduces the risk of damage and ensures compliance with standards . By following these guidelines, fiber optic cables can be safely installed under cable trays, maintaining signal integrity and long-term reliability.
