Structure and Components

A 4-core optical fiber cable consists of four separate strands of glass or plastic fibers, each designed to carry light signals for high-speed data transmission over long distances with minimal loss . The main components include:

  • Core: The central part of each fiber where light travels, typically 8–10 micrometers in diameter for single-mode fibers and 50–62.5 micrometers for multimode fibers .
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index, reflecting light back into the core to maintain signal integrity .
  • Buffer Coating: Protects the core and cladding from moisture and physical damage, usually made of plastic .
  • Strength Members: Materials like aramid yarn (Kevlar) or steel wire that provide tensile strength and prevent breakage .
  • Outer Jacket: The protective outer layer, often made of polyethylene (PE) for outdoor use or LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) for indoor safety .
