MTN, Huawei Launch Nigeria''s First 800G Optical Network to Boost
MTN Nigeria and Huawei have launched the country''s first 800G optical network, boosting internet speed and data
MTN Nigeria, in collaboration with Huawei, launched the nation's first hybrid 400G–800G Automatically Switched Optical Network (ASON), marking a significant milestone in the country's digital infrastructure . This network includes Nigeria's first single-wavelength 800G optical channel on a dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) backbone, enabling faster and more reliable internet connectivity for homes, businesses, and cloud services .
Currently, all 800G optical equipment in Nigeria is supplied by Huawei, a global technology provider. There is no publicly documented Nigerian company manufacturing 800G optical transceivers or related high-speed optical networking hardware. Nigerian involvement is primarily in network deployment, operation, and maintenance rather than manufacturing .
While Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in optical network capacity, the absence of local manufacturing highlights an opportunity for domestic companies to invest in high-speed optical technology production. Future initiatives could focus on technology transfer, local assembly, or research partnerships to develop indigenous capabilities in 800G optical networking. In summary, MTN Nigeria's 800G network relies on Huawei's equipment, and as of now, there is no Nigerian manufacturer producing 800G optical connections.
