Visual Inspection

Start by examining the cable physically for any visible damage such as cuts, kinks, bends, frayed fibers, or discoloration along its length. Check the connectors at both ends for dirt, misalignment, or broken ferrules, as these can also cause signal loss or intermittent connectivity . Microbends or excessive bending beyond the cable's minimum bend radius can create cracks or breaks in the fiber, so inspect areas where the cable passes through trays, cabinets, or tight loops .

Using a Visual Fault Locator (VFL)

A VFL emits a bright red laser light through the fiber. If the fiber is broken, the light will leak out at the break point, making it visible through the cable jacket. This method is effective for short cables or accessible sections, allowing you to quickly locate faults without specialized equipment . Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)

The OTDR trace displays a graph where a sudden drop indicates a break, and it also provides the distance to the fault, helping technicians locate the exact spot even in underground or concealed installations .

Continuity and Power Testing

A fiber optic continuity tester or a combination of a light source and power meter can help detect signal loss. Connect a light source to one end and a power meter to the other; significant drops in power indicate a fault along the fiber . This method is useful for confirming suspected breaks or verifying repairs.
