Communication between core switches and routers

Core switches communicate with routers using Layer 3 IP routing, VLAN trunking, and routing protocols to efficiently forward traffic between networks and subnets.

Core Switch and Router Roles

Core switches operate primarily at Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) but many modern core switches also support Layer 3 routing. They manage high-speed traffic within the data center or enterprise backbone, connecting multiple access and distribution switches. Routers, on the other hand, operate at Layer 3 (Network Layer) and are responsible for forwarding packets between different IP networks or subnets, often connecting internal networks to external WANs or the Internet .

Core switches with Layer 3 capabilities can participate in these protocols to reduce latency and improve redundancy .
  3. IP Addressing and Interfaces Each router interface connected to a core switch is assigned an IP address corresponding to the subnet of the VLAN it serves. The core switch forwards traffic to the router based on MAC addresses for local delivery and IP addresses for inter-network routing .
  4. Layer 3 Switching Many core switches are Layer 3 switches, meaning they can perform routing functions internally. In this case, the switch can route traffic between VLANs without sending it to an external router, but it still communicates with routers for WAN or external network access .
