You can convert a non-PoE switch to support PoE devices using a PoE injector or by using a PoE-enabled switch, which delivers both power and data over Ethernet cables.

Understanding PoE and Switch Types

A PoE (Power over Ethernet) switch is a network switch that supplies both data and electrical power through a single Ethernet cable to connected devices such as IP cameras, VoIP phones, and wireless access points, eliminating the need for separate power adapters . In contrast, a normal (non-PoE) switch only transmits data and requires external power sources for devices . PoE switches come in different standards:

  • PoE (IEEE 802.3af): up to 15.4W per port
  • PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at): up to 30W per port
  • PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt): up to 60–100W per port

Methods to Enable PoE on a Switch

1. Using a PoE Switch

If your switch is already PoE-capable, devices can receive power automatically. On managed switches like Cisco Catalyst, PoE may need to be enabled or configured to prevent oversubscription or voltage drops. This involves:

  • Listing all powered devices (PDs) and their wattage
  • Ensuring the switch's total PoE budget exceeds the sum of device requirements plus overhead
  • Configuring PoE settings via commands or management interface, including CDP/LLDP negotiation for power allocation

2. Using a PoE Injector

For a non-PoE switch, a PoE injector can supply power to individual devices without replacing the switch. Steps include:

  1. Connect the Ethernet cable from the switch to the injector's Data In port.
  2. Connect another Ethernet cable from the injector's PoE Out port to the powered device.
  3. Plug the injector into an AC outlet to supply power.
  4. Verify the device receives both data and power . PoE injectors are ideal for small setups or when only a few devices require PoE, and they support distances up to 100 meters over Cat5e/Cat6 cables .

3. Connecting PoE and Non-PoE Switches

You can also connect a PoE switch to a normal switch to extend the network. Devices connected to the PoE switch will receive power, while devices on the non-PoE switch will only receive data. This setup is useful for mixed environments where some devices need PoE and others do not .

Practical Considerations

  • Power Budget: Always ensure the total PoE demand does not exceed the switch's capacity.
  • Cable Quality: Use Cat5e or higher to maintain power and data integrity.
  • Device Compatibility: Check that devices support the PoE standard provided by the switch or injector.
  • Distance Limitations: Standard Ethernet limits PoE delivery to 100 meters. By using either a PoE switch or PoE injectors, you can effectively convert a network to support PoE devices without extensive rewiring, simplifying installation and reducing costs .
