How to determine the circuit of the distribution box

To determine a circuit in a distribution box, trace the outgoing lines, check breaker labels, and verify the load using a multimeter or circuit tester.

Step 1: Safety First

Always turn off the main power before opening the distribution box. Wear insulated gloves and safety glasses to prevent electrical hazards . Ensure no one can accidentally turn the power back on while you work.

Step 2: Understand the Incoming Lines

Identify the incoming power source and the type of circuit breaker used for the main supply. Most distribution boxes use a three-phase system with a neutral and ground wire. Knowing the incoming configuration helps you understand how power is distributed to each circuit .

Step 3: Check Labels

Look at the breaker labels inside the box. Proper labeling indicates which breaker controls which area or appliance, such as "Kitchen," "AC Unit," or "Lighting." If labels are missing or unclear, update them using durable materials like vinyl or polyester .

Step 4: Trace Outgoing Circuits

Follow each outgoing line from the breaker to the load. For 220V loads, one phase, one neutral, and one ground are used; for 380V three-phase loads, all three phases plus ground are connected . Use a circuit tester or multimeter to confirm which breaker powers which outlet or appliance.

Step 5: Verify Load and Protection

Understand the load connected to each circuit and ensure the breaker rating matches the appliance requirements. Critical equipment like furnaces, sump pumps, or medical devices should have dedicated circuits . Avoid overloading circuits by following the 80% rule: the continuous load should not exceed 80% of the breaker rating .
