Distribution diagram of the distribution box

A distribution box diagram shows the main incoming supply connected to protective devices, busbars, neutral and earth links, and outgoing circuits for safe and organized power distribution.

Overview of a Distribution Box

A distribution box (DB box) is a centralized electrical enclosure that receives incoming power and distributes it to multiple circuits safely. It contains key components such as:

  • Main Switch/MCB: Controls the incoming supply and acts as the main isolator.
  • RCCB/RCD: Provides protection against leakage currents and electric shocks.
  • MCBs (Single or Double Pole): Protect individual circuits from overloads and short circuits.
  • Busbars: Metal strips that distribute electricity to all outgoing circuits.
  • Neutral and Earth Links: Ensure proper return paths and grounding for safety.
  • SPD (Surge Protective Device): Optional, protects against voltage surges .

Typical Single-Phase Distribution Box Diagram

Below is a simplified textual representation of a single-phase AC distribution box:

Incoming Supply (L, N, PE) | v +----------------+ | Main Switch/MCB| +----------------+ | v +----------------+ +----------------+ | RCCB |------>| Earth Bar PE | +----------------+ +----------------+ | v +----------------+ +----------------+ | Phase Busbar | | Neutral Bar | +----------------+ +----------------+ | | +----+----+----+ +----+----+----+ | MCB1 | MCB2 | MCB3 | | N1 | N2 | N3 | +----+----+----+ +----+----+----+ | | v v Outgoing Circuits (Lights, Fans, AC, etc.)

Explanation

  1. Incoming Supply: The live (L), neutral (N), and protective earth (PE) wires enter the DB box from the main power source.
  2. Main Switch/MCB: Acts as the primary isolator and protects the entire system.
  3. RCCB/RCD: Detects leakage currents and trips to prevent electric shocks.
  4. Busbars: Distribute phase and neutral connections to individual MCBs.
  5. MCBs: Each MCB protects a specific outgoing circuit, such as lighting, sockets, or appliances.
  6. Neutral and Earth Links: Provide return paths and grounding for safety.
  7. Outgoing Circuits: Power is delivered to various loads in the building .

Notes

  • In three-phase systems, the diagram is similar but includes three phase busbars (L1, L2, L3) and corresponding MCBs for each phase.
  • Sub-distribution boards receive power from the main distribution board and further distribute it to specific areas or floors.
  • Final distribution boards are located near the loads and contain MCBs for individual circuits . This diagram ensures organized, safe, and efficient distribution of electrical power while allowing easy maintenance and protection against faults.
