Composite optical cable color

Composite optical cables use standardized color codes for individual fibers and buffer tubes, following the TIA/EIA-598-C 12-color sequence to ensure clear identification and prevent miswiring.

Standard Fiber Color Sequence

For individual fibers within a cable, the TIA/EIA-598-C standard defines a 12-color sequence:

  • Blue
  • Orange
  • Green
  • Brown
  • Slate (Gray)
  • White
  • Red
  • Black
  • Yellow
  • Violet
  • Rose (Pink)
  • Aqua (Light Blue) This sequence is applied to fibers in loose-tube, tight-buffered, or ribbon cables. For cables with more than 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with added stripes or markers to maintain unique identification for each fiber .

Buffer Tube and Composite Cable Identification

In composite or multi-tube cables, fibers are grouped into buffer tubes, each of which is also color-coded. For example, in a 24-fiber cable with two 12-fiber tubes:

  • The first tube may be Blue, containing fibers 1–12 in the standard 12-color sequence.
  • The second tube may be Orange, containing fibers 13–24, repeating the 12-color sequence with stripe markers to distinguish repeated colors . For higher fiber counts (48, 96, 144 fibers), the “Tube and Fiber” system is used: the outer tube has a color, and the fibers inside follow the 12-color sequence. This allows technicians to identify any fiber by its tube color and position within the tube .

Special Cases and MPO Connectors

For 16-fiber MPO connectors, a 16-color sequence is sometimes used:

  • 13: Olive
  • 14: Magenta
  • 15: Tan
  • 16: Lime This sequence is often applied in European standards or high-density ribbon cables .

Outer Jacket Colors

The outer jacket of a composite optical cable may also be color-coded to indicate fiber type:

  • Yellow: Single-mode
  • Orange: Multimode OM1/OM2
  • Aqua: Multimode OM3/OM4 Custom jacket colors or printed legends can be used for in-building distribution or breakout cables to indicate cable classification and fiber specifications .
