Leather Fiber

Leather fiber is primarily composed of collagen, a structural protein arranged in a triple-helix formation. These collagen molecules form fibrils, which bundle together to create fibers, and these fibers interweave into a three-dimensional network that gives leather its strength, elasticity, and durability . The fibrous structure varies across the hide:

  • Grain layer (outer surface): Dense, tightly packed fibers, mainly type III and IV collagen, providing abrasion resistance and tensile strength .
  • Corium layer (central region): Coarser fibers, primarily type I collagen, arranged in a crisscross pattern for flexibility and shock absorption .
  • Fiber bundles: Collagen fibrils group into bundles, which are chemically cross-linked during tanning to stabilize the structure and prevent degradation . Leather fibers are responsible for the material's resilience, water vapor permeability, and long-term durability, distinguishing it from synthetic woven or knitted fabrics .

Tail Fiber

Tail fibers are the finer, peripheral fibers found near the surface or edges of the leather, often in the papillary dermis. These fibers are thinner and more delicate than the central corium fibers, contributing to:

  • Surface smoothness and texture
  • Flexibility and pliability
  • Resistance to minor surface stresses While not as strong as the main leather fibers, tail fibers play a crucial role in the overall tactile quality and finishing of leather products .

Bonded or Regenerated Leather

Leather fiber can also be processed into bonded or regenerated leather, where leather scraps and residues are finely ground (60–80%) and mixed with natural latex to form sheets . This material mimics leather's appearance but lacks the natural elasticity and hierarchical fiber structure, making it less durable for continuous use.
