Splicing a fiber optic cable to a drop wire involves careful preparation, precise splicing (fusion or mechanical), and secure attachment using approved drop wire clamps to ensure minimal signal loss and long-term reliability.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Fiber optic stripper and buffer tube stripper
  • Precision fiber cleaver
  • Fusion splicer or mechanical splice kit
  • Splice protection sleeves and splice tray
  • Optical power meter or OTDR for testing
  • Drop wire clamp (e.g., WIREVISE® for Figure 8 cables)
  • Safety gloves, goggles, and lint-free wipes
  • Utility knife, pliers, and torque wrench for clamp installation

Step 1: Cable Preparation

  1. Measure the required length of the drop cable, leaving extra for adjustments.
  2. Strip the outer jacket of the main and drop cables using a fiber optic stripper, exposing the buffer tubes or individual fibers.
  3. Use a buffer tube stripper to remove the coating from the fiber cores.
  4. Clean the fibers with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes to remove debris .

Step 2: Clamp Installation

  1. Select a drop wire clamp compatible with your cable type and diameter.
  2. Position the clamp on the support structure (pole or wall) ensuring a smooth cable path.
  3. Attach the clamp using screws, bolts, or adhesive per manufacturer specifications, applying correct torque to avoid damage .
  4. Insert the prepared fiber into the clamp, ensuring it is centered and not kinked.
  5. Tighten the clamp gradually and perform a gentle tug test to confirm secure attachment .

Step 3: Splicing the Fiber

Fusion Splicing (Preferred for Permanent Connections)

  1. Cleave the fiber ends at 90° using a precision cleaver.
  2. Align the fibers in a fusion splicer and apply an electric arc to fuse the ends.
  3. Place a heat-shrink splice sleeve over the joint and shrink it to protect the splice.
  4. Test the splice with an optical power meter or OTDR to verify minimal loss (typically ≤0.1 dB), .

Mechanical Splicing (Quick or Temporary Fix)

  1. Align the fiber ends in a mechanical splice unit with index-matching gel.
  2. Insert the fibers until they touch and secure them in the housing.
  3. Place the completed splice in a splice tray for protection.
  4. Mechanical splices typically have slightly higher loss (0.2–0.3 dB) but are faster and require less equipment .

Step 4: Finalizing the Installation

  1. Route the fiber subunit from the clamp to the splice closure carefully, avoiding sharp bends.
  2. Coil any excess fibers neatly in the splice tray.
  3. Ensure the messenger wire is properly grounded if required.
  4. Close the splice enclosure and verify the signal integrity with testing equipment .
