Diode Laser Weapons

Diode laser weapons are directed-energy systems that use laser diodes to generate focused beams of light capable of disabling or destroying targets.

Overview

Diode laser weapons are a subset of directed-energy weapons (DEWs) that convert electrical energy into laser light using laser diodes. These systems can range from low-power dazzlers, which temporarily blind or disorient targets, to high-power systems capable of damaging drones, missiles, or other small vehicles . Unlike traditional firearms or missiles, diode laser weapons deliver energy at the speed of light, allowing near-instant engagement and virtually unlimited “ammunition” as long as electrical power is available .

How They Work

A diode laser weapon typically consists of three main components:

  • Laser diodes: Convert electricity into coherent light. Modern diodes can exceed 1000 W of peak optical power per 1 cm bar .
  • Power supply: Provides the necessary electrical energy to drive the diodes.
  • Cooling system: Removes excess heat generated during operation, often using fluid-based systems compatible with extreme temperatures . The emitted photons are focused into a narrow, high-intensity beam using optical components such as micro-lenses and delivery fibers. Multiple diodes can be combined to increase brightness and power, enabling engagement of targets at longer ranges .

Applications

Diode laser weapons are particularly effective against small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which are difficult to intercept with conventional weapons due to their low thermal signature, small size, and high speed . Systems in the 5–10 kW range have been demonstrated to disable drones, while larger military systems can reach tens or hundreds of kilowatts for more robust defense . Other applications include:

  • Non-lethal dazzlers: Temporarily disorient personnel or blind optical sensors without permanent damage .
  • Vehicle-mounted defense: Integrated on ships, armored vehicles, or aircraft to protect against missiles or drones .
  • Air and space defense: Emerging systems aim to counter threats such as incoming missiles or satellites .
