Fiber Optic Sensors: Principles, Types, and Uses
Fiber optic current sensors work by detecting changes in light as it interacts with a magnetic field created by an
1. Light Source The light source provides the optical signal that travels through the fiber. Common sources include laser diodes, LEDs, or superluminescent sources. The choice of source depends on the required wavelength, intensity, and coherence for the sensing application . 2. Optical Fiber The optical fiber acts as the medium for transmitting light. It consists of a core and cladding with different refractive indices, allowing light to propagate via total internal reflection. Fibers can be plastic or glass, with plastic fibers being flexible and cost-effective, while glass fibers can withstand higher temperatures and provide higher precision . 3. Sensing Element (Transducer) The sensing element modulates the light in response to the physical quantity being measured, such as strain, temperature, pressure, or chemical composition. In intrinsic sensors, the fiber itself acts as the sensing element, while in extrinsic sensors, an external transducer interacts with the fiber . 4. Optical Detector The detector receives the modulated light and converts it into an electrical signal. This can be a photodiode, phototransistor, or other light-sensitive device. The detector measures changes in intensity, phase, wavelength, or polarization caused by the sensing element . 5. Electronic Processing Unit The electronic processing unit analyzes the signal from the detector. It may include wave analyzers, optical spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, or microcontrollers to process, display, and interpret the sensor data .

Extrinsic fiber-optic sensors use an optical fiber cable, normally a multimode one, to transmit modulated light from either a non-fiber optical sensor, or an electronic sensor connected to an optical transmitter. A major benefit of extrinsic sensors is their ability to reach places which are otherwise inaccessible. An example is the measurement of temperature inside aircraft jet engines by using a fiber to transmit radiation into a radiation pyrometer located outside the engine. Extrinsic sensors can also be used in the same w
