Through-type optical cable

A through-type optical cable, also known as a through-beam fiber optic cable, transmits light from a source to a receiver across a defined path, commonly used in sensing and detection applications.

Overview

Through-type optical cables are a specialized form of fiber-optic cable designed to carry light from a transmitter to a receiver in a straight path, enabling detection of objects or changes in the light beam along the path . Unlike standard fiber-optic cables used primarily for data transmission, through-type cables are often integrated into industrial sensors, automation systems, and safety devices.

Construction and Functionality

These cables consist of optical fibers enclosed in protective sheathing, similar to conventional fiber-optic cables . The fibers guide light efficiently with minimal loss, using a core and cladding structure to maintain total internal reflection. In through-beam setups, one cable connects to a light source, and another aligned cable receives the transmitted light. When an object interrupts the beam, the sensor detects the change, triggering a response in the system.

Applications

Through-type optical cables are widely used in:

  • Industrial automation: Detecting the presence or absence of objects on production lines.
  • Safety systems: Light curtains and perimeter protection where interruption of the beam signals a hazard.
  • Positioning and counting: Monitoring movement or counting items in manufacturing processes.
  • Robotics and material handling: Ensuring precise alignment and object detection.

Advantages

  • High-speed response: Light-based detection allows rapid sensing.
  • Immunity to electromagnetic interference: Unlike electrical sensors, optical cables are unaffected by EMI .
  • Long-distance capability: Can transmit light over several meters without significant signal loss.
  • Durability: Protective coatings and sheathing make them suitable for harsh industrial environments . Through-type optical cables are an essential component in automation and sensing systems, providing reliable, fast, and interference-free detection over a defined optical path .
