How to wire a small power distribution box for surveillance cameras

To wire a small power distribution box for surveillance cameras, connect each camera's positive and negative leads to the corresponding terminals on a 12V or 24V DC power supply box, ensuring correct polarity and sufficient amperage for all cameras.

Step 1: Choose the Right Power Supply Box

Select a power distribution box that matches your cameras' voltage and total amperage requirements. Most small systems use 12V DC boxes, which are suitable for standard analog or IP cameras. Ensure the box can supply enough current for all cameras combined; for example, five cameras drawing 0.5A each require at least 2.5A total output .

Step 2: Gather Tools and Materials

You will need:

  • Screwdrivers for terminal connections
  • Wire cutters and strippers
  • Electrical tape or connectors
  • Voltage tester
  • Drill and mounting hardware for the box
  • Siamese coaxial cables or power pigtails for each camera

Step 3: Mount the Power Box

Install the box in a secure, dry location near a mains AC outlet. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating. Use screws and a drill to mount the box on a wall or surface .

Step 4: Connect AC Power

Plug the power box into a standard AC outlet (100–240V, 50/60Hz). Some boxes include a mains lead and may have a fuse or PTC auto-reset fuses for overload protection .

Step 5: Wire the Cameras

  1. Identify the positive (red) and negative (black) leads on the power box terminals.
  2. Connect the corresponding leads from each camera to the correct terminals. Do not reverse polarity, as this can damage the cameras .
  3. If using Siamese cables, strip the power leads and secure them to the screw-down terminals on the box. The other end connects to the camera via a DC male power pigtail .
  4. For multiple cameras, ensure each channel on the box is connected individually if the box has multiple outputs, or use a distribution terminal that can handle the total current .

Step 6: Test the System

After wiring, turn on the power supply and check each camera. Verify that all cameras receive power and display video correctly. If a camera does not power on, check the fuse or PTC reset switch and confirm correct polarity .

Step 7: Secure and Organize Cables

Use cable ties or conduits to keep wires neat and prevent accidental disconnections. Label each cable for easier troubleshooting in the future .

Tips for Safety and Reliability

  • Avoid overloading the power supply; calculate total amperage before connecting all cameras.
  • Use PTC auto-reset fuses if available to prevent permanent fuse burnout.
  • Keep the power box away from moisture and direct sunlight.
  • Double-check all connections before powering on to prevent short circuits or camera damage . By following these steps, you can safely wire a small power distribution box for your surveillance cameras, ensuring stable power delivery and easier maintenance.
