Ambient temperature requirements during optical cable laying

Optical cables should generally be installed when both the ambient and cable temperatures are above 0–5°C, with prior storage at similar temperatures for at least 24 hours.

Minimum Installation Temperature

For most optical fiber cables, including LSZH-sheathed types, the ambient temperature should not fall below 0–5°C during installation, as low temperatures make the cable stiffer and more prone to cracks or mechanical damage when bent or pulled . If the cable has been stored in cold conditions, it should be kept in a heated environment (around 20°C) for at least 24 hours before installation to allow the cable to reach a safe handling temperature . While the focus is on minimum temperatures, it is also important to avoid excessively high ambient temperatures, which can accelerate thermal aging or risk insulation damage. Standard installation cables typically tolerate up to 60°C ambient temperature .
