How Unidirectional Fiber Optic Cables Work

Fiber optic cables transmit data using pulses of light generated by lasers or LEDs at the transmitter end. The light travels through the fiber to the receiver, where it is converted back into an electrical signal. This optical-to-electrical conversion inherently makes the transmission unidirectional: the signal flows from the source to the destination and cannot be reversed without additional hardware or separate fibers . In active optical cables (AOCs), such as HDMI or DisplayPort fiber cables, each end is specifically marked as “Source” or “Display”, and reversing the connection will prevent signal transmission . Similarly, fiber optic USB AOC cables are designed with multiple fibers to allow some reverse data flow, but video signals remain unidirectional .
