Electricity meter wiring distribution box

The electricity meter is wired by connecting the utility supply to the meter, then routing the output through the main isolator and MCBs to the distribution board, with proper grounding and color-coded conductors.

Overview of Components

  1. Electric Meter: Measures electricity consumption and serves as the interface between the utility supply and the building.
  2. Main Disconnect / Double-Pole MCB: Acts as the main isolator for safety.
  3. Distribution Board (Consumer Unit): Contains single-pole or double-pole MCBs, RCDs, and busbars to distribute power to sub-circuits.
  4. Busbars: Separate bars for neutral and earth connections.
  5. Protective Devices: MCBs, RCDs, and fuses protect circuits from overloads and faults.

Wiring Steps

  1. Safety First: Disconnect the main supply before working inside the meter or distribution box to prevent electric shock or arc faults .
  2. Mounting: Securely mount the meter box and distribution board, typically 5 feet above ground for easy access .
  3. Service Entrance: Route the incoming utility conductors (line and neutral) from the transformer or pole into the meter socket. For single-phase systems, the line is usually red or black, and neutral is black or white depending on local code .
  4. Meter Connections: Connect the incoming line and neutral to the meter terminals. The outgoing terminals of the meter feed the main disconnect switch or double-pole MCB .
  5. Main Isolator / DP MCB: Connect the meter output to the main isolator. This allows complete disconnection of the building's electrical system for maintenance or emergencies .
  6. Distribution Board Wiring:
    • Connect the live output from the main isolator to the common busbar for single-pole MCBs.
    • Connect the neutral output to the neutral busbar.
    • Connect the earth wire to the earth busbar, which is bonded to the building's grounding electrode .
  7. Branch Circuits: Each MCB in the distribution board feeds a sub-circuit. Single-pole MCBs are used for 120–230V circuits, while double-pole MCBs are used for 240V appliances .
  8. Color Coding:
    • Live/Phase: Red or black (single-phase), or black/red/blue (three-phase)
    • Neutral: Black or white (single-phase), blue (IEC)
    • Earth: Green or green/yellow Proper color coding prevents reversed polarity and ensures safety .
  9. Testing: After wiring, verify all connections, check for proper grounding, and test each circuit before energizing the system .

Key Safety Considerations

  • Bonding: Neutral should only be bonded to the metallic chassis in the main panel; subpanels must isolate neutral and earth to prevent circulating currents .
  • Clearances: Maintain proper spacing and follow local electrical codes for installation height and conduit usage .
  • Permits and Utility Approval: Always coordinate with the utility company before installation to ensure compliance and safe energization . By following these steps, the electricity meter and distribution board will be safely and correctly wired, ensuring reliable power distribution and protection for all connected circuits .
