How to create a cable tray opening in Revit

Cable trays in Revit can be created using the Systems tab in the Electrical section, allowing horizontal and vertical placement with customizable fittings and elevations.

Step 1: Access the Cable Tray Tool

Open your Revit project and navigate to the Systems tab, then select Electrical and click on Cable Tray. You can choose between Cable Tray with Fittings or without Fittings depending on your project needs .

Step 2: Set Type and Parameters

Before placing the tray, configure its properties:

  • Width and Height: Define the tray dimensions.
  • Offset: Set the vertical distance from a reference level.
  • Bend Radius: Adjust for smooth turns.
  • Fittings: Load and select vertical inside/outside bends, T-junctions, reducers, and unions as needed . Use Edit Type to modify these parameters and apply them to your cable tray type.

Step 3: Place Horizontal and Vertical Runs

  • Horizontal Runs: Click to start the tray, drag along the desired path, and click to place points. Avoid conflicts with lights, transformers, or other MEP elements .
  • Vertical Runs: Use vertical bends to connect different levels or drop down from ceilings. Revit allows you to model vertical transitions seamlessly .

Step 4: Set Elevation

Set the middle elevation to position the tray accurately in the building, such as over ceilings or within electrical rooms. This ensures proper coordination with other systems .

Step 5: Modify and Adjust

After placement, you can:

  • Move or slide trays to avoid clashes.
  • Add fittings for bends, junctions, or reducers.
  • Switch views between single-line diagrams and detailed rung views for clarity .

Step 6: Import or Use BIM Objects (Optional)

If you have pre-designed cable trays or manufacturer-specific models, you can import BIM objects directly into Revit to enhance accuracy and save time . This is useful for complex layouts or when adhering to specific standards.

Step 7: Documentation

Annotate your cable tray runs and generate schedules or drawings to communicate design intent. Revit supports detailed documentation for coordination and project handoff . By following these steps, you can efficiently model cable tray systems in Revit, ensuring proper routing, coordination, and documentation for your electrical projects.
