Why does the optical power meter increase

Optical power meter readings increase when the optical signal entering the meter becomes stronger, the meter's sensitivity is adjusted, or environmental and calibration factors enhance the detected signal.

Factors Causing Increased Readings

1. Higher Input Optical Power: The most direct reason for an increase is that the light source itself emits more power. If the transmitter or laser output rises, the OPM detects a stronger signal, resulting in a higher reading in dBm or watts . 2. Wavelength and Calibration Effects: OPMs are wavelength-sensitive. If the meter is set to a wavelength closer to the peak sensitivity of its photodiode or sensor, the measured power can appear higher. Conversely, misalignment with the actual wavelength can reduce readings . Proper calibration ensures accurate readings, but small deviations in wavelength or temperature can temporarily increase the measured power . 3. Reduced Attenuation or Loss in the Fiber: Any improvement in the optical path, such as cleaning connectors, reducing bends, or replacing damaged fiber, can decrease signal loss. Less attenuation means more light reaches the meter, increasing the reading . 4. Meter Settings and Signal Processing: Many OPMs allow adjustments to filters, bandwidth, or averaging. For example, increasing the detector's responsivity or reducing noise through digital filtering can make the meter display a higher effective power . Thermal meters may also show higher readings if the sensor mount warms slightly, affecting the temperature difference measured . 5. Environmental Factors: Temperature changes, vibrations, or stray light entering the sensor can influence readings. In sensitive photodiode meters, even minor environmental changes can cause the meter to register a higher optical power .

Summary

An optical power meter reading increases primarily due to stronger input light, better alignment with the meter's wavelength sensitivity, reduced fiber losses, or changes in meter settings and environmental conditions. Understanding these factors is essential for accurate fiber optic testing and network maintenance .

Optical power meters usually display time-averaged power. So for pulse measurements, the signal duty cycle must be known to calculate the peak power value. However, the instantaneous peak power must be less than the maximum meter reading, or the detector may saturate, resulting in wrong average readings. Also, at low pulse repetition rates, some meters with data or tone detection may produce improper or no readings. A class of "high power" meters has some type of optical attenuating element
