A laser diode is a type of semiconductor device designed to generate coherent, monochromatic, and highly focused light by stimulating electrons to emit photons in a controlled manner . Unlike a standard light-emitting diode (LED), which produces incoherent light, a laser diode produces light that is aligned in phase, frequency, and direction, forming a narrow, intense beam .
Laser diodes typically have a p-i-n structure, consisting of a p-type region, an intrinsic (undoped or lightly doped) active layer, and an n-type region . The intrinsic layer is where light is generated through the recombination of electrons and holes. The ends of this layer are coated with reflective surfaces to form an optical cavity, which traps light and amplifies it via stimulated emission. In this process, incoming photons trigger excited electrons to release additional photons that are identical in wavelength, phase, and direction, resulting in a coherent laser beam . The wavelength of the emitted light depends on the semiconductor material and the optical cavity design, allowing laser diodes to emit across a wide spectrum, from infrared to ultraviolet . The device requires a threshold current to achieve population inversion, after which coherent light is emitted from the partially reflective end of the cavity .
Laser diodes are widely used in fiber-optic communications, barcode scanners, CD/DVD/Blu-ray devices, laser pointers, medical instruments, and industrial tools due to their precision, efficiency, and compact form factor . In summary, a laser diode is a semiconductor device that produces a coherent, monochromatic, and highly directional light beam through stimulated emission, enabled by its p-i-n structure and optical cavity design.
