Roles and Functions

Core Switches: Serve as the backbone of the network, connecting distribution/aggregation switches and handling high-volume traffic with low latency. They support advanced Layer 3 routing, high throughput, fault tolerance, and redundancy to ensure network stability . Aggregation Switches: Positioned between access and core layers, aggregation switches consolidate traffic from multiple access switches, wireless APs, or edge devices. They support Layer 2/3 functions, link aggregation (LACP or static), QoS, VLAN segmentation, and redundancy to optimize traffic flow and reduce bottlenecks .

Configuration Best Practices

1. Management VLAN and IP Addressing:

  • Use the core switch as the management subnet gateway for aggregation and access switches.
  • Configure a management VLAN on the core switch and enable auto-negotiation for plug-and-play deployment .
  • Assign a mix of static and dynamic IP addresses for aggregation and access switches to simplify initial deployment and ongoing management. For example, allocate half of the subnet for static IPs and the other half for DHCP-assigned addresses . 2. Link Aggregation:

  • For large-scale deployments, use Zero Touch Provisioning (ZTP) or import network plans to automatically bring aggregation and access switches online .
  • Enable LLDP for automatic link detection and Eth-Trunk negotiation to reduce manual configuration errors.
