Quadrant and Octre

A quadrant is one of four regions in a 2D coordinate plane, while an octant is one of eight regions in a 3D coordinate system.

Quadrant

In a two-dimensional Cartesian plane, the x-axis and y-axis intersect at the origin and divide the plane into four quadrants . Each quadrant is bounded by two half-axes and is typically numbered counterclockwise starting from the upper right:

  • Quadrant I: x>0,y>0
  • Quadrant II: x<0,y>0
  • Quadrant III: x<0,y<0
  • Quadrant IV: x>0,y<0 Quadrants are used to describe the signs of coordinates, determine the positivity of trigonometric functions, and locate points in the plane .

Octant

In three-dimensional space, the x-, y-, and z-axes intersect at the origin and divide space into eight octants . Each octant is defined by the signs of the coordinates (x,y,z) . The first octant is where all coordinates are positive: x>0,y>0,z>0 . Unlike quadrants, there is no standard numbering for the other seven octants, but they can be described by their relative positions, such as (top, front, right) or by the signs of coordinates, e.g., (+,,+) , . Octants are the 3D analog of quadrants, used to locate points in space, describe vectors, and analyze spatial relationships.
