How to cut the steel wire in an optical cable

Use specialized cable cutters or an abrasive cutting tool to cleanly sever the steel wire in optical cables while protecting the internal fibers.

Understanding the Cable Structure

Optical cables often include steel wire armor for protection, along with internal optical fibers and aramid threads for strength. The steel wire is typically stranded, meaning multiple small wires are twisted together around a core. Cutting this steel wire improperly can cause fraying, which compromises the cable's integrity and makes handling difficult .

Recommended Tools

  • Wire or cable cutters: Heavy-duty cutters designed for steel wire are ideal for smaller-diameter armored cables .
  • Abrasive cut-off wheel or chop saw: For thicker or high-tensile steel wires, an angle grinder or chop saw with a metal-rated abrasive wheel ensures a clean cut without crushing the strands .
  • Protective gear: Always wear safety glasses and gloves to prevent injury from flying wire fragments .
  • Ferrules or heat-shrink tubing: After cutting, use a ferrule or adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing to prevent fraying and protect the cut end .

Cutting Technique

  1. Measure and mark the desired cut location accurately.
  2. Secure the cable to prevent movement during cutting.
  3. Cut the steel wire using the appropriate tool:
    • For small-diameter wires, use shear-type cable cutters to encircle and slice the strands cleanly.
    • For thicker steel armor, use an abrasive cut-off wheel or chop saw to melt and sever the wires without crushing them .
  4. Protect the internal fibers: Ensure the cutting depth does not damage the optical fibers inside. Use a stripper or knife to remove the outer sheath carefully before cutting the steel wire .
  5. Finish the end: Apply a ferrule or heat-shrink tubing to hold the strands together and prevent fraying .

Safety and Maintenance

  • Avoid using standard pliers or diagonal cutters on high-tensile steel wire, as this can deform the strands and create sharp edges .
  • After cutting, apply a light coat of anti-corrosion spray if the cable is exposed to moisture or outdoor conditions .
  • Always follow manufacturer guidelines for the specific optical cable type, as armored and lightweight indoor cables may require different cutting approaches . By following these steps and using the correct tools, you can cut the steel wire of an optical cable cleanly, maintain the integrity of the internal fibers, and ensure safe handling and long-term performance.
